Scouts Canada celebrates 30 Years of Scoutrees:
70 Million Trees Planted Since 1972

(Press Release)

OTTAWA, May 1, 2002 – Scouts Canada is marking Scoutrees’ 30th anniversary by planting its 70 millionth tree. As part of its annual Scoutrees program, Scouts Canada members will plant two million trees this year throughout Canada in May and June.

"Scouts Canada has a long-held tradition of fostering learning by doing. Scoutrees allow youth to learn about their environment and put new skills to use, while at the same time making Canada a cleaner, more beautiful place to live," said Phil Newsome, President and CEO of Scouts Canada. "Scouts is proud of its contribution over the past 30 years, and strives to continue this program for generations to come."

Scoutrees help beautify our communities and provide a practical way for Scouts to display their care for the environment. Planters receive training in planting, conservation, and forestry before they plant trees. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and leaders will plant in parks, recreation areas, conservation areas and other public lands during this annual environmental project.

Scoutrees is first and foremost an environmental program which, over the years, has helped raise funds for Scouting. Through sponsors and donors Scoutrees income helps fund local Scouting activities, and council programs, and also provides much needed income for the Canadian Scout Brotherhood Fund. Sponsors for this year are St. Joseph Printing, Jeep®., Agrium Inc., and the TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation.

Scouts Canada, the country’s leading youth organization, offers fun and exciting outdoor adventure for boys, girls and youth age 5-26 in communities across Canada. Over 150,000 young people enjoy Scouts Canada’s programs, which are provided by over 50,000 caring and dedicated volunteers. Scouts Canada’s national office is located in Ottawa.

Federal Environment Minister David Anderson has agreed to plant our ceremonial 70 millionth Scoutree on the morning of May 30th. The Minister will plant the tree with two youth members on the front lawn of National Office. Media will be invited to the event.

All Members of Parliament and Senators will be receiving a white pine sapling delivered to their Hill office later this week. A tent card attached to the bag containing the tree will read (in French and English):

"Scouts Canada is celebrating Scoutrees' 30th anniversary by planting its 70 millionth tree."
